Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, or EMDR for short, is a unique and effective therapy developed to reduce the distress experienced from traumatic experiences and memories. It is well researched and is frequently used in treating PTSD and trauma-related challenges. Unlike talk therapy approaches, it directly engages your body and nervous system to reprogram your body’s response to triggers and stressors. It also has the ability to address core negative beliefs about self such as I am worthless or I am not safe.
One way EMDR stands apart from other therapies is it does not require detailed discussion, verbalization, or engaging the stories about traumatic events. This can be especially helpful to individuals who find it difficult to discuss their traumatic experiences. It can also be effective with individuals who have not had success with traditional talk therapy styles.
